Jim Smolko was a beautiful person and a wonderful pianist. His playing was so very sensitive, and he particularly enjoyed playing the music of Frederic Chopin. Audiences were always touched after hearing him play. Jim taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music, prior to teaching at Central Michigan University. He was a humble and discreet individual (a rarity in the musicians' world...) and always kind to others. He shall be missed. RIP, dear Jim.

I just now learned of Mr. Smolko's passing. He was my music instructor for a semester at CMU....at the end of the season, he played the entire "Moonlight Sonata"... all three movements.....and he played that 3rd movement beautifully....I never got to thank him....

Mr. Smolko was a wonderful man as well as a complete pianist and musician. In the years I was a student at CMU, his recitals were always "events", and he was revered by students and faculty alike. He was really a treasure.

I remember Mr. Smolko from my years as his student at CMU. Although I never majored in music he always treated me like all his other piano students. I was often his "page turner" at his trio concerts. Thank you Mr. Smolko for all the memories!
